In 1993 Russell L. Parr, CFA, ASA founded Intellectual Property Research Associates. to research the value of intellectual property including patents, trademarks and copyrights. This research has yielded three publications that report the financial terms of intellectual property transactions, including royalty rates from licensing agreements. In August of 2001 the company was incorporated as IPRA, Inc. and consulting services were added to the company’s offerings. Russell L. Parr has over 25 years of consulting experience. Mr. Parr is responsible for completion of complex consulting assignments involving the valuation and pricing of patents, trademarks, copyrights and other intangible assets. His opinions are used to accomplish licensing transactions, mergers, acquisitions, transfer pricing, litigation support, collateral-based financing, and joint ventures. Mr. Parr started valuing intellectual property in 1981. The initial methods he inherited from others were crude and inaccurate.
In 1989 Mr. Parr and a co-author Gordon V. Smith wrote the first book about valuing intellectual property – Valuation of Intellectual Property & Intangible Assets. John Wiley & Sons published this book which lead to many other books by Mr. Parr eventually setting the foundation for creating a separate division at John Wiley & Sons devoted to all manner of books on intellectual property. Past assignments have included the valuation of the Dr. Seuss copyrights and the patent portfolio of AT&T. Mr. Parr has also conducted valuations and royalty rate studies for pharmaceuticals, semiconductor process and product technology, agricultural formulations, automotive interior panel manufacturing, automotive battery technology, biotechnology, camera technology, chemical formulations, cellular communications technology, computer form factors, computer software, cosmetics, consumer and corporate trademarks, drug delivery systems, flowers, incinerator feed systems, eye surgery instruments, surgical and medical instrument technology, wind turbine systems, and motivational book copyrights.
